I'd appreciate any group discussion about T1 insulin and weight gain. My son was diagnosed at age 5 is now 21. Always thin/lean and athletic. For many years I pushed him to eat low carb thinking the less insulin the better. About age 12 a provider suggested "just let him eat like every other kid and cover with as much insulin as needed" I felt like a bad mom for the years of restrictions. He remains on multiple daily injection for two reasons: cost and preference. Many years of Humalog/Lantus with a change to Tresiba in the past 6 to 9 months due to night lows. Bg levels are more even yet he is frustrated with weight gain despite usual exercise and same eating patterns. He plans to talk to his care team yet I'd sure welcome yout thoughts. Too much basal insulin causing sustained high insulin levels? The Tresiba itself? Better control causes gains? A need to return to more restricted diet?
I'm a mom supporting a child with type 1 diabetes since 2002.
