where people touched by diabetes help each other.

For those that take insulin with your meals, how do you go about taking it when you're out at a restaurant or other social gatherings? Do you take it out in front of everyone or do you try to find a secluded spot to take it? How does it make you feel when you take it, knowing people are curious?

I had no problem taking my insulin in public places. I have been a diabetic since I was 9 years old and I am 30 now. People will get curious. Take it as a teaching moment.. Don't be afraid of what people say or be ashamed of your condition. Answer questions and be your own warrior in your diabetes wars!!

I agree. In some instances doing shots in public is a teaching moment. However beware,I had a boss of mine fire me for having a low blood sugar and another boss told me to do my shot in the bathroom because I was "scaring people"

****did you ever report them? That blows my mind, that they were able to do that to you. In both instances that would be discrimination.

Sometimes I can do it on the sly. Mostly I find a secluded place. Some people are weird about it. Some are none the wiser. I try to find a secluded place to save the hassle of arguing with brainless, judgemental freaks. I don't let it worry me too much though.

Wow****that is just horrible. That would be unfair dismissal for being fired for low blood sugar. And the other boss should be pulled up for discrimination. I refuse to go to the bathroom to do mine. I have always done mine in public, where and whenever. It's a part of who I am and I refuse to hide it like it's something to be ashamed of. If I am out with someone that hasn't seen me do it before I just let them know, hey I am a diabetic so will be doing a needle. Usually they have no problem, unless it's a person with a needle phobia. If I know that about them I give them a heads up and they look away for the 2 seconds it takes me to do it. Most times people don't even know I have done it and it's usually at the lunch or dinner table, it's pretty quick so unless I draw attention to it, they probably won't notice. Plus as I use pens and not syringes it is a lot less intimidating for potential onlookers.

I used to go to the restroom to shoot, but now I just do at the table. People seem to understand.
